ATLANTA - The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Academic Affiliations has selected the Cognitive Disorders Specialty Care Education Center of Excellence at the Atlanta VA Medical Center as a new site in its Patient-Centered Specialty Care in Education Centers of Excellence (SCE COE) Initiative. The Atlanta VAMC will be funded up to $500,000 each year for the next three years.
This SCE COE, under the direction of Anne Tomolo, MD and Corrine Abraham, DNP, RN, will provide an interprofessional approach to the care of Veterans with cognitive disorders and incorporate the expertise of physicians, nurses, neuropsychologists, and social workers in the fields of Geriatrics, Neurology, Palliative Care and Mental Health to manage the clinical, functional, behavioral, and psychological aspects of these disorders.
The initiative also provides an opportunity to intertwine educational experiences of an interdisciplinary group of physician trainees in the specialties of Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Neurology, Palliative Care and Psychiatry with nursing students (BSN and NP), and Social Work graduate students.
The goal of this three-year initiative is to foster transformation of clinical education and patient care by preparing graduates of health professional schools and programs to work in and lead patient centered interprofessional teams providing specialty care in the setting of coordinated longitudinal primary care.
