Former NBLSA member returns to mentor students

    PORTLAND, OR, UNITED STATES

    Story by Cpl. Francisco Martinez

    Marine Corps Recruiting Command

PORTLAND, Ore. - Lt. Col. Christopher Shaw, Special Assistant for Legislative and Legal Matters for the Secretary of the Navy, traveled to Portland, Oregon, to participate in the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) Convention.

Shaw was a member of the organization as a law student at Boston College.

“When I went through law school back in 2001 - 2004 I was a member of BLSA and actually went to a NBLSA convention,” said Shaw. “So to see it from the perspective of graduating from law school, and now talking to law students, it was pretty good. At one level I was trying to inspire them but in fact they inspired me.”

Shaw returned to help generate awareness of the Marine Corps’ judge advocates, while also sharing his story with qualified law students and their influencers to help enable their future success.

“We’re real proud of many of the NBLSA students who become members of the Marine Corps judge advocates and judge advocates in the other service branches,” says Algoron Johnson Cooper, founder, NBLSA. “I’m especially happy to see judge advocate officers here, you bring so much to the table when you come and NBLSA over the years appreciates all that you’ve done.”

Throughout the week of the convention Shaw acted as a judge for the mock trial, answered questions in a panel discussion, and acted as a keynote speaker for the Marine Corps.

He also acted as a mentor for some of the students, and hopes he can be an example for them to follow.

“It was a great opportunity to go out and go back to a community that I used to be a part of,” says Shaw. “I think they saw themselves in me and certainly I saw myself in them.”
