MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – They always say one man’s trash is another’s treasure.

Marines, sailors and their families are invited to attend the 2nd Hand Market at the community center aboard Tarawa Terrace March 21.

The bi-annual event is a large yard sale geared toward the base community. Both community centers aboard base housing worked to coordinate the sale at the same time to ensure a wider variety of items for shoppers.

“We hope to provide military families the chance to purchase items at a budget-friendly rate,” said Victoria Brown, a recreation specialist with the Tarawa Terrace Community Center. “As well as affording our community members a family-friendly location to purchase and sell their items.”

Families changing duty stations are also afforded the opportunity to sell some items they may not be able to take with them to their new home, and families new to the installation may be able to find some things they need.

“This event is a good opportunity for families getting ready to PCS to sell off some of their unneeded items while earning money to set up their new household,” said Brown, a native of Coconut Creek, Florida. “It’s a cost-effective way for families just arriving to set up their new home.”

According to community center staff, patrons attend to look for items that may interest them at a discounted price, ranging from clothes and handmade goods to collectibles they may not be able to find in stores. The market brings people in the community with common interests together.

The variety of household items attract all from the Camp Lejeune community. The market sale only allows the sale of used items, so prices will always be lower than retail.

“I can’t wait to set up my table for this year’s event,” said Melissa Lopez, a participant and native of New York, New York. “Not only do I like selling my unneeded items, I like helping new families.”

Anyone looking to sell items must register for the event by Feb. 26.
