SUMTER, S.C. - The Shaw Air Force Base fire department responded to a brush fire in Sumter, South Carolina, near the Main Gate here, March 16.

The 20th Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen assisted the Sumter County Fire Department in containing the fire.

There were no injuries from the fire.

The 20th CES and 20th Medical Group Airmen responded to the fire within three minutes, ensuring the suppression of the fire and safety of the Sumter community, said Master Sgt. Aaron Bunyea, 20th CES deputy fire chief.

Approximately half an acre was damaged by the fire including a structure, which was only minimally damaged, said Bunyea.

The Shaw Fire Department operates on a mutual aid agreement with the Sumter County Fire Department, which states that Sumter County, the city of Sumter, and Shaw Air Force Base, will assist each other when responding to fires, accidents and emergencies.

On average, 20th CES Airmen respond to incidents off base one to two times a week, said Senior Airman Boyd Korb, 20th CES firefighter.

In addition to assisting with emergencies, the partnership has also created a solid foundation for all fire departments to train with one another.

“It helps both us and the Sumter County better our fire protection skills as well as provides various inputs on our career field,” said Korb.

The partnership between Shaw and the local community is the key to ensuring the safety of both the firefighters and the Shaw and Sumter community.
