Alexandria, Va. – About 100 wounded, ill and injured Soldiers and veterans from across the United States and Europe will join together at Fort Bliss, Texas, to compete in the 2015 U.S. Army Trials. Hosted by Fort Bliss, the Army Warrior Transition Command will conduct the Army Trials. Training and practice sessions begin Sunday, March 22, and the Army Trials are slated for March 29 – April 2.

Army Warrior Trials include Soldier and veteran athletes who will face off in archery, basketball, cycling, track and field, swimming, shooting, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball. Participants include athletes with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, serious illnesses and amputations.

"We are excited and honored to host Army Soldiers and veterans during the 2015 Army Trials at Fort Bliss," said Maj. Gen. Stephen Twitty, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss commander. "We have the best athletic and recreational facilities in the Army here at Fort Bliss, and I couldn't think of a more appropriate place to host our Soldier athletes."

According to Col. Chris Toner, commander, Warrior Transition Command, Fort Bliss is the perfect showcase for the Army Trials. “This represents something much bigger than a competition,” he said. “The Trials serve as a platform for wounded, ill and injured Soldiers and veterans to showcase their phenomenal abilities and highlight the power of resilience and adaptive reconditioning.”

“Adaptive reconditioning and sports play a significant role in the Army’s holistic approach to recovery and transition for these Soldiers,” he said. “Warrior Trials allow these Soldiers and veterans to set goals and to meet them. We believe events of this type provide a sense of purpose, community, and improve their outlook and quality of life.”
Following the conclusion of the Army Trials, coaches and leaders will assess the results and athletes selected for the Department of Defense Warrior Games 2015 Army Team will receive an official invitation.
The Department of Defense Warrior Games 2015 are slated for June 19-28, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.
