1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment puts on a show

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, WA, UNITED STATES

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Soldiers with 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team showed off their capabilities to a delegation of Indian military officials during a combined armed live fire exercise March 11, on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

The exercise kicked off with a boom when 155mm artillery rounds began to rain down on the simulated objective. Following the artillery fire, mortars and combat air support from AH-64 Apaches suppressed the mock target while a Stryker platoon moved in to clear and take an objective.

“We are combining different assets on one objective at the same time,” said 1st Lt. Wesley Wood, a platoon leader with 1-23rd Infantry Regiment. “We are using a variety of communications to make sure that we continue to fire on a target to accomplish our objective.”

Although the exercise was a chance to demonstrate the capabilities of the unit its main purpose was for Soldiers to practice their combat skills and refine their abilities.

“This is a platoon-level live fire exercise,” said Wood. “It certifies us as we move into larger operations at company and battalion level. We’re practicing things that we have to do to be ready and deployable as a unit.”

Honing their skills is as much an individual effort as a unit effort. Wood said perfecting their skills requires the leaders working with Soldiers and Soldiers investing themselves in their craft.

From the moment the first artillery round impacted the target to the last machine gun round fired, the Indian delegation and other military leaders in audience witnessed the combat readiness of the unit. Their training, precision timing and the efforts of each Soldier paid off as they put on an impressive show and accomplished their mission.

“They did really well,” said Wood. “This was a good chance for us to hone our skills and demonstrate our capabilities. I’m happy with the way my platoon performed out there today.”
