JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - An education forum at the American Lake Conference Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, was hosted by The Association of the United States Army to provide information about education issues and opportunities for service members and their families March 11.

The forum included an education panel that consisted of representatives from local school districts and the Department of Defense to provide insight on what each agency is doing in regards to the education of military members.

Some of the topics addressed were adult continuing education opportunities, helping military families prepare, financially, for their education needs and how moving affects military children.

“No one is more fiercely devoted to the education of their children and their own education than military family members,” said Patty Barron, director, Family Readiness, Association of the United States Army.

During the forum the panel answered questions from the audience addressing their concerns for the different requirements between school districts, and how the DOD is partnering with local and regional school districts to help military children with education.

“Ask questions at your local and regional level,” said Johnson. “Do your research. This will help you understand what you can do for your child to help them through their move to a new school.”

When a service member receives permanent change of station orders, it not only affects them but also their family, said Mona Johnson, director of school support, Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Children are often moved from school and are required to transfer grades, transcripts and have to meet a new set of requirements to graduate at their new school district.

“We want the military families to understand they have people that are supporting them,” Alecia Grady, division chief, Armed Forces Community Service. “The education community has a general interest and concern in how the school policies work for military children.”

This forum is the first one AUSA is conducting throughout military installations across the nation to address military members concerns.

“This event is a good way to get information about school-age children,” said Col. William Green, command chaplain, I Corps. “These things get communicated to the service members who then can tell their families the things to help them through their educational needs.”
