    Story by Capt. Adan Cazarez

    82nd Combat Aviation Brigade

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Duty, honor and country - “Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be,” Gen. Douglas MacArthur told cadets at the U.S. Military Academy in 1962.

Each year the U.S. Army recognizes active duty, Reserve, and National Guard company-grade officers that demonstrate the ideals which MacArthur stood for and believed.

These officers are recognized through the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award Program. Among those 27 awardees announced earlier this month is an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper.

Capt. Sidney L. Roberts, aviation officer, 2nd Battalion (Assault), 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, will be among those to receive the prestigious MacArthur Leadership Award.

“This award says more about the leadership and dedication of my Soldiers than anything I could have ever done individually,” said Roberts. “They motivated me to be the best leader I can be.”

Roberts deployed Alpha Company, last year to Afghanistan and most recently conducted a change of command ceremony in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, after serving as company commander.

“Capt. Roberts’ leadership has influenced subordinates and peers to exceed previously established individual and organizational standards,” said Lt. Col. William Gallaway, commander, 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade. “Sidneys’ command presence and philosophy towards leadership dramatically enhanced Alpha Company.”

Roberts’ nomination for the MacArthur Leadership Award was no surprise to her chain of command as she distinguished herself throughout her career.

“I nominated Capt. Roberts for the Gen. Douglas MacArthur award based on her leadership and tenacity in mission execution,” said Gallaway, who served as Roberts’ commander while task organized to 1st ARB. “Her performance exemplifies the ideals of duty, honor, country, and she was the clear choice to receive the MacArthur Leadership Award.”

Recipients of the MacArthur Leadership Award will attend an award ceremony and associated events that will take place in the nation’s capitol at the end of May.
