MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Six Marines with Marine Transport Squadron 1 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., conducted a successful search and rescue mission of a Washington, N.C., man near the Cedar Island Ferry Terminal, March 11.

The man was spotted, along with his tent and kayak at approximately 9 a.m., after he was reported missing to the Beaufort County Sheriff Office after not returning home from a kayaking trip March 10.

The severely injured man was identified as Lee Morton Cooper.

VMR-1 Marines transported Cooper in an HH-46E Sea Knight to Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern where his condition was stabilized.

“We were conducting normal training flight operations when we received the call from the sheriff’s office,” said Maj. Andrew D. Rice, aircraft commander for the flight. “We support multiple agencies that can get a hold of us at any time when they need support with search and rescue efforts or locating missing people.”

According to Rice, VMR-1 Marines conducted a search of the shoreline and followed the assumed path of Cooper’s kayak.

“This was one of the fastest searches I have been on,” said Rice. “All of the Marines performed very well and the man was lucky we found him as quickly as we did.”
