ST. PAUL, Minn. - Capt. Amber Manke, Headquarters Support Company commander, 34th Infantry Division Headquarters Battalion, received the prestigious General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award for 2014.

While in front of her company formation presenting awards and promotions to Soldiers in her unit last weekend, Division Headquarters Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Carl Fassbender announced that she too was an award winner. Fassbender, a 2001 MacArthur Award winner, nominated Manke for the award.

“Captain Manke understands duty, lives honor and is dedicated to country,” Fassbender said in his nomination letter. “She is a leader at every battalion function, from unit training assemblies to volunteer team building opportunities. She works to ensure all Soldiers understand the responsibility that service to country includes, and she holds them accountable.”

The MacArthur Award recognizes company grade officers from the active Army, National Guard and Army Reserve who demonstrate the ideals for which General MacArthur stood for. Only six officers and one warrant officer from the Army National Guard are recognized each year.

“Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying point to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope becomes forlorn,” said General of the Army Douglas MacArthur to the cadets of the U.S. Military Academy in1962.

“She helps Soldiers understand that when they put the uniform on, they are representing the Red Bulls, the Minnesota Army National Guard, and the U.S. Army,” said Fassbender.

Manke is no stranger to recognition. In September 2014, she was recognized by the Minnesota Humanities Center with the Veteran’s Voice Award which recognizes Minnesota veterans who have honorably served and are making extraordinary contributions to their community.

Manke will be recognized in Washington, with 27 of her peers, in a ceremony later this summer.

Other Minnesota Army National Guard winners over the years include: Lt. Col. Amanda Digre, 1998; Col. Robert Intress, 2000; Lt. Col. Fassbender, 2001; Lt. Col. Charles Kemper, 2002; Lt. Col. Jason Benson, 2004; Chief Warrant Officer four (retired) Pamela Howell, 2004; Lt. Col. Scott Rohweder, 2006; and Maj. Lukas Wright, 2012.

Douglas MacArthur was an American five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II.
