PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – As a fire slowly creeps towards a neighborhood, threatening to destroy the evacuated homes, the South Carolina National Guard and civilian fire and rescue swoop in to douse the flames and save the day here March 10, 2015.

As part of Vigilant Guard 2015, a joint training exercise involving military and civilian fire and rescue teams, civilian personnel on the ground from Midway Fire and Rescue coordinated with a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter carrying BAMBI Buckets full of water to dump the contents onto the mock fires.

“The mission today was to train together with aerial assets from the Guard to practice stopping the spread of fire using a BAMBI Bucket,” said Lt. Peter Copeland, with Midway Fire and Rescue (MFR).

The BAMBI Bucket is a large, collapsible bucket attached to a helicopter or other aircraft that allows aircrews to accurately drop a column of water or foam on a target and put out large or small fires effectively and efficiently.

“The BAMBI Bucket allows us to cover a wider area than what our 12-man team can cover,” said Copeland.

Guardsmen from the 1-111th General Support Aviation Battalion and 2-151st Aviation Battalion worked together with firemen from MFR to coordinate the snuffing out of the fire. The fire and rescue squad marked off the designated area, and the Black Hawk helicopter accurately dropped gallons of water on the target.

“We conduct training like Vigilant Guard to be able to support civilian agencies during an emergency,” said Capt. Jonathan Strickland, operations officer with the 2-151 Avn. Bn. “As South Carolina National Guardsmen, we support civilian agencies when they need assets that we are able provide to assist with their operations.”

The National Guard regularly trains with emergency management and first responders to protect the citizens and property in the state and stands ready to serve the needs of the public after a natural disaster.
