GEORGIA GARRISON TRAINING CENTER, FORT STEWART, Ga. – To maintain a high readiness level, Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment conducted an air assault artillery raid 7 March at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

The live fire exercise increased mission readiness for the 1-118th FA, as well as maintained air assault proficiency for 1st Air Assault Battalion, 185th Aviation Regiment.

The Georgia Guardsmen of the Savannah-based 1-118th overcame numerous obstacles to conduct their training, showing they are as ready and capable as any active duty component.

“The biggest obstacle was getting new personnel … every crew [member] has to be certified together before they can do this,” said Master Sgt. Jerry Sexton, noncommissioned officer in charge of Hickory Lightning training with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1-118th.

The Soldiers trained long and hard to expand their knowledge in the field and to accomplish their duties.

“Training, preparation and planning for this event took several months at the unit level to get Soldiers ready,” said Sexton. The training consisted of sling-load training and rehearsals in a three-phase operation using the crawl, walk, run concept.

The air assault artillery raid training has been an annual event for the past two years. It’s a long process involving setting up the equipment, securing a location, individual training, as well as coordination with Georgia National Guard aviation assets.

“It’s very motivating for junior Soldiers to get out and do cool stuff like this. It’s a definite success,” Sexton said. “It’s worth all of the hard work.”
