HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. - One book, two books, red book, Dr. Seuss books! Holloman Elementary School participated in the 18th annual “Read Across America Day,” by inviting parents, guardians and members of Team Holloman to come read to students throughout the week.
“What makes this year’s Read Across America so special for us are our special guest readers, Col. Robert Kiebler, 49th Wing commander, and Susie Galea, mayor of Alamogordo,” said Theresa Langtry, Holloman Elementary School librarian. “It also marks the 111th birthday of Theodore [Seuss] Geisel."
The National Education Association designated Read Across America as a weeklong celebration of reading in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and the fact he was one of the biggest advocates of reading.
To show their support, Holloman Elementary School picked a special theme for each day of the week. On Monday students wore red, blue or numbered shirts to represent "One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish." Tuesday was a "Fox in Sox" theme, with students wearing crazy socks. Wednesday was "Oh the places we will go," where students represented with crazy hairstyles or wore crazy hats. Thursday was Thing 1 and Thing 2, twin day. Lastly, on Friday students were encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.
"Dr. Seuss believed books and learning to read should be fun and exciting for children,” said Langtry. “So we celebrate it for a whole week to honor his contributions while coming together as a nation of readers.”
The NEA is building a nation of readers through its signature program Read Across America. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships and reading resources.
“It is an important program because it is geared toward people of all ages and allows the community to come together and motivate children to read and embrace books. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school,” said Langtry.
The NEA mission is to advocate for education professionals and to unite their members and the nation to fulfill the promise of public education to prepare every student to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world.
"Read Across America encourages and motivates our children to read and use their imaginations. It also allows adults to participate in local school activities and share their favorite Dr. Seuss stories with the younger generation,” said Langtry.
A proclamation signed by President Barack Obama states, “Reading is the means by which we discover new ideas and unlock the potential of tomorrow’s leaders. As we recognize the importance of literacy, let us resolve to play a part in developing the next generation of readers and writers. As mentors, friends, and caring adults … take time to engage young people in this critical endeavor. Together, we can enrich our souls, strengthen our society, and give every child a chance to succeed.
“Anyone can contact their local school or library to find out how they can help make Read Across America a success,” said Langtry.
According to Dr. Seuss, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
