    Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES)

NEW ORLEANS - Sergeant Maj. Daniel Fliegel took his post as the new 4th Marine Division sergeant major, at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans, Feb. 26, 2015.

Sergeant Maj. Bradley Kasal relinquished his post as the 4th MarDiv sergeant major to Fliegel and became the senior enlisted advisor of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. Kasal took over for Sgt. Maj. Ronald Green, who is now the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

“My mission as the 4th Marine Division’s sergeant major is to keep a pulse on the unit and keep the commander advised of any issues that I become aware of, and provide guidance to the other senior enlisted leaders within the division, both active and reserve,” said Fliegel.

Fliegel is a combat engineer who served in the Persian Gulf War, the liberation of Panama in Operation Promote Liberty and completed four tours in Iraq after the 2003 invasion. This is the first time Fliegel has led Marines in the Reserve component, but he is pleased with current training schedules and requirements.

“There is no need for changes when there’s nothing broken here,” said Fliegel. “The ground combat element is my comfort zone, I served with the 2nd MarDiv and 1st MarDiv for a combination of well over 20 years of my career and the ground combat element individual training standards and mission essential tasks will remain the same for now.”

Fliegel brings almost 30 years of experience to the 4th MarDiv. He remembers the day he decided to enlist in 1986 when recruiters visited his high school in Northfield, Minnesota.

“When I was a senior in high school, they announced over the speakers that the armed forces were in the guidance counselor’s office and all seniors would be excused from class,” said Fliegel. “The only reason I went down there was to get out of a history test that morning and the only reason I talked to the Marine recruiter was because he was giving away some cheap pocket stuff. For a couple pens, pencils and a keychain I heard his spiel, and three days later I was at the MEPS raising my hand saying I would, and that’s coming up on 28 years ago and I don’t regret any of it.”

Kasal left Fliegel with a few last words of advice before he left.

“Sgt. Maj. Kasal told me, don’t get tied to the office and email. Get out and see the Marines and take care of the other stuff as you can but, most importantly, get to know your Marines,” said Fliegel.

Fliegel said if there was one thing that he could express to the Marines currently under his charge, it would be to thank them.

“I want to thank everyone for their service,” said Fliegel. “It’s no secret at this time in our nation’s history that everyone currently wearing the uniform has either enlisted or re-enlisted in a time of war and that speaks volumes about their moral fiber, character and backbone.”

Fliegel looks forward to leading and getting to know his Marines in 4th MarDiv, and has accepted this duty as a great honor.
