MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Firefighters with the Miramar Fire Department were awarded at the 2015 Scripps Ranch Civic Association Recognition Night at Scripps Ranch Library in San Diego, March 2.

The firefighters were being recognized for their outstanding service to the community.

“This is great to be recognized and validate that we know what we’re doing and that we are here to support the community,” said Danny Rivas, captain with Miramar Fire Department. “It’s a great feeling.”

When a fire broke out in the Scripps Ranch area last May, resources were low and a call went out. The Miramar Fire Department was quick to respond with what resources they had.

“We don’t know what to expect and anytime we are called to an emergency, we know people are in need and that’s why we’re there,” said Greg Magill, chief with Miramar Fire Department.

They were assigned to one division and were the initial attack crew to protect the houses in the canyon from the fire, added Magill.

The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar commanding officer also made some remarks commending the firefighters on their service and dedication.

“We spend a lot of time doing our best to be a good neighbor and be a part of the community,” said Col. John Farnam, MCAS Miramar CO. “That day Chief Magill and his firefighters were exactly what they needed to be, when they needed to be and where they needed to be. They put a fire out in an area very susceptible to fire. If they wouldn’t have gotten out there, who knows where the fire would’ve [gone].”

The Miramar Fire Department intends to stay ready for any emergency and continue their strong relationship with the San Diego community.

“We have a seamless relationship with San Diego and specifically the San Diego Fire Department,” said Magill. “We share resources and training. It’s a great relationship.”
