JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – The sounds of beer bottles being opened competed with the musical entertainment from the band The Olymountain Boys, and the smell of sour ales being poured contended with the aroma of hors d’oeuvres being passed around as people from all ranks, branches and backgrounds took part in the Joint Base Lewis McChord 2015 Brewfest.
The JBLM Brewfest 2015 “tapped off” Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at the McChord Club on JBLM as an event intended to help encourage interest in home brewing for non-brewers and to make connections between current brewers.
“We are emphasizing the culture of home brewing as a craft,” said Colin Brooks, director of Special Events Department of Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “A lot of Department of Defense employees and service members really enjoy the home brewing culture, and this [Brewfest 2015] really gives them the opportunity to network with big brewers and talk to other home brewers.”
The JBLM Brewfest twisted off its sixth year by hosting over 20 different breweries in conjunction with a homebrew competition in which over 200 homebrews from service members were judged.
“It gives service members, who like to brew, a chance to have fun with their hobby,” said Brooks. "It also acts as a way of allowing them to practice their brewing skills for later job markets if they are interested.”
The JBLM Brewfest is open to all branches of the military and provides some friendly competition among the branches and individuals, stated Brooks.
Competitors encouraged brewers and non-brewers to attend the event.
“The event was amazing,” said Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jeremy Allison, a P-3 avionics technician and winner of multiple categories in the 2015 Brewfest Homebrew Competition. “I would recommend that every home brewer affiliated with the U.S. military engage in this competition and participate in it. It not only inspires camaraderie, but actually helps to promote beer knowledge and BJCP [Beer Judge Certification Program] standards.”
The event was about more than just brewing suds.
“It’s not all about the beer!” exclaimed Allison. “The culture of homebrew is amazing; the camaraderie is amazing; but it’s not only doing that, it’s preserving many styles of brewing while promoting solidarity between the different branches of the military! Now that’s amazing!
