MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan - The Third Annual Snow Bowl flag football tournament was held at Misawa Air Base Feb. 20.

Seven Navy and four Air Force teams competed in the tournament that is usually played on a snow-covered field due to Aomori Prefecture’s heavy snow fall.

This year’s tournament is the first time that the field has not had at least one foot of snow cover.

An uncharacteristically small amount of snowfall this year resulted in all of the snow melting during the first half of the tournament.

“Unfortunately this year we didn’t get as much snow as we usually do, but we’re still out here having a great time building some esprit de corps and just having fun,” said Chief Hull Technician Bryan Abbot, this year’s tournament coordinator.

The Air Force’s 35th Fighter Wing (FW) Operations Command beat Commander, Task Force 72’s team to win this year’s championship game.

“I’m glad we could come out. It’s awesome, it builds camaraderie when the different branches get together. It’s a good time and I’m glad we got to interact with everybody,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Bates, a member of 35th FW’s Operations Command team.

Misawa’s very own "Super Fan" provided lively and entertaining play-by-play commentary for the games.

Each game lasted 30 continuous minutes and was played on an 80-yard field.

Sodas, hot dogs, and Frito chili pie were available for the event.

The first Snow Bowl tournament was organized by Naval Air Facility (NAF) Misawa in 2013. NAF Misawa Sailors have kept their roles as key organizers for the tournament ever since.

Many sporting and athletic competitions are held on Misawa Air Base throughout the year.
