KALAELOA, Hawaii - The Hawaii Army National Guard presented a $4.5 million check to the Honolulu-Pacific Federal Executive Board in support of the 2014 Combined Federal Campaign at Kalaeloa, Feb. 20.

As the year’s Campaign Chair, it fell to the HIARNG to coordinate, audit, and train in all matters related to the CFC for the Hawaii-Pacific Area, which includes Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The CFC provides a large pool of organizations federal employees can choose to donate towards, said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Hau Huynh, one of the Chair coordinators.

“There’s about 30,000 different charities. So you can designate where you want your money to go to, or the money can go to an undesignated pot where it is evenly distributed to all the [CFC] charities,” said Huynh.

Regional Project Officer Lt. Col. Lynn Ishii admits at first she didn’t fully understand the impact of the CFC, but now encourages others to contribute.

“There’s so many organizations out there that are charitable, non-profit that need funds to operate and provide support to the community,” Ishii said.

“This is something that I learned from doing the campaign—why the campaign exists, and who it benefits…Now that I understand what it is, it’s really important to step up and give back to our communities and donate, or volunteer,” she added.

The $4.5 million check comes from approximately 21,000 individuals in the Hawaii-Pacific region.

“There’s about 95,000 employees in the region, so we had about 17 percent participation,” Ishii explained.

“We’re one of the smallest regions, but when you look at the per capita donations, we tend to be one of the higher regions.”
