    188th Infantry Brigade

FORT GILLEM, Ga. - Lt. Col. Grant Carroll left a legacy of change as he retired from the Army. He has served in the Tennessee National Guard as a Battery commander and a Brigade Intelligence officer; and most recently as the commander of the 3rd Battalion, 345th Combat Service Support Regiment. Each position had its challenges.

“We’ve seen many changes, it seems like eons when I took office. We’ve gone from looking for missions and having to prove our relevancy to having more to do than we can shake a stick at,” Carroll said. The observer-coach/trainers in the reserve battalion now have a recurring training mission.

“You will be fully utilized in the future.”

Before retiring, he relinquished command of the 3-345th to Lt. Col. Daniel Prieto, coming to the battalion from the 335th Signal Command as the deputy operations officer.

“When I was first notified of command, I started doing research. We in the battalion continue to train to standard, and continue to prepare for upcoming missions. I look forward to this adventure in our support to this great nation,” said Prieto. The O-C/Ts help train, advise, and assist National Guard and Reserve units across the United States helping them maintain their deployment readiness as a part of the Army Force Generation cycle.

The incoming commander has served in many positions including the executive officer with Alpha Company, 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award) and the U.S. Army Aviator Badge.

The 3-345th is one of three reserve battalions in the multi-component 188th Infantry Brigade, which is taking on a new mission as a part of Operation Bold Shift where the focus shifts from post-mobilization training of guard and reserve Soldiers to pre-mobilization training.

“In the last two years there have been great improvements in the organization. Lt. Col. Carroll has developed initiatives to build the capabilities of our O-C/Ts,” said Col. Christopher Ramsey, 188th Infantry Brigade’s commander. He went on to say that Carroll represented the epitome of a warrior leader.

“As the Army and First Army continue to change and the 188th continues to evolve, continue to live by the Army Values,” said Carroll during his change of command speech, addressing his troops for the last time.
