PORT HUENEME, Calif. – Construction Electrician 1st Class Brian Nielsen, assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3, was presented a certificate of recognition from the Port Hueneme City Council Chamber, Feb. 2.
Port Hueneme Mayor Sylvia Munoz Schnopp presented the certificate to recognize Nielsen’s efforts to help save an unconscious man’s life and a baby girl from a burning truck while he was on an early morning drive to a seminar near downtown Ventura, Nov. 1.
According to Nielsen, he opened up both rear passenger doors due to the flames on the driver’s side of the truck together with the probation officer that was there first. The probation officer removed the baby girl while Nielsen looked over the driver and saw that he was unconscious. His first attempt on saving the man was hindered due to the flames and heat from the truck. He went back and tried a final attempt to remove him from the burning truck and succeeded.
“God put me in the right place at the right time,” said Nielsen. “I honestly cannot explain how the truck did not explode until 30 seconds after the driver and I were safe.”
The Naval Construction Force is a vital component of the U.S. Maritime Strategy. The force provides deployable battalions capable of providing disaster preparation and recovery support, humanitarian assistance and combat operations support.
