JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support employees overcame limited staff and a tight delivery deadline to support an urgent request for a deploying Navy ship, a DLA Troop Support Clothing and Textiles supplier operations division chief said.

Sharon Piecyk helped oversee the delivery of 51 mattresses to the USS Farragut in Jacksonville, Florida, a day before the ship’s deployment Jan. 7.

While employees that typically handle mattresses were on leave for the New Year holiday, available DLA Troop Support Clothing and Textiles employees, including customer operations, supply and procurement personnel, helped expedite the order, Piecyk said.

“This is how C&T works,” she said. “If there’s an urgent need, everyone works together [and] we figure it out.”

Piecyk said this coordination was critical to accurately processing the request as part of DLA’s audit readiness initiative.

“Everything has to be done properly in the system,” she said. “The documents have to be done correctly, and it requires coordination from the different entities in C&T.”

The requested mattresses are typically stocked at Travis Association for the Blind in Austin, Texas, a third-party logistics provider. However, some were located with the contracted vendor, Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind, in North Carolina, when the request came in, Piecyk explained.

DLA Troop Support Clothing and Textiles worked with the vendor and DLA Land and Maritime to send the mattresses directly to the USS Farragut.

The ship’s supply officer said the speedy acquisition made him look like a hero onboard.

“I [realize] this was all done over the holidays with minimal manning and resources,” Navy Lt. Ty V. Hoang wrote in an email to DLA Troop Support, DLA Land and Maritime, and Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind representatives. “I appreciate the eagerness and passion you all put into your job to enable the fleet. Thank you so very much!”
