HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania National Guard captain and staff judge advocate assigned to the 28th Infantry Division was sworn in as Pennsylvania's 33rd lieutenant governor during a ceremony at the state Capitol Tuesday.

Michael J. Stack III was elected lieutenant governor during the November 2014 election on the democratic ticket along with Gov. Tom Wolf.

Stack comes from a family with a history of public service. His grandfather served a term in Congress during the Great Depression, his father served as a Democratic ward leader in Philadelphia and his mother served on the Philadelphia Board of Education and an elected judge of the municipal court.

"They took the big problems and they had bold ideas and to do those things in those times it took incredible courage and forethought," Stack said optimistically referring to his grandfather's generation during his inaugural address. "I believe we need big ideas now. I believe big ideas can be found within the walls of this chamber."

Several fellow National Guard members attended the swearing-in ceremony and were recognized during the event.

"For Pennsylvania National Guard members and fellow judge advocates it's a thrill to have a lieutenant governor who is a fellow guardsmen and understands the unique place the National Guard has in defense of our commonwealth and our nation," said Col. Robert J. DeSousa, Pennsylvania National Guard state judge advocate.

The Pennsylvania National Guard's historic First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry also served as honor guard during the ceremony held in the ornate state Senate chamber.

Lt. Gov. Stack began his military career in 2007 after enlisting in the Pennsylvania National Guard and was originally assigned to the Pennsylvania National Guard's 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division, according to his official biography.

Stack is a graduate of LaSalle University and the Villanova School of Law and previously served as a state senator from Philadelphia for 14 years, resigning from that seat to serve as lieutenant governor.
