CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Service members looking to improve themselves professionally can seek higher education during mini-education fair at the John A. Lejeune Education Center aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
Every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., schools reach out to prospective students aiming to help them become more competitive in the job market.
The fair started in 2011 and continues to provide information to participants today. Several of the education center’s resident schools are among the 19 schools who attend.
“Instead of having to wait for the bi-annual job and school expos, Marines and sailors can come to the mini-education fair,” said Jim Steadman, education branch manager at the education center. “They can communicate with the schools and see what they have to offer.”
Although the fair is available for all authorized base patrons, it is held on Tuesdays when the transition readiness seminar is held.
“More than 10,000 Marines attend TRS every year,” said Steadman, a Boston native. “We hold the fair at the same time the transition readiness seminar to expose Marines to education before they leave the service.”
When a Marine or sailor finishes their service they can take advantage of their GI bill, which helps pay for college level education.
“The fair is a quick way to introduce service members with schools they can attend,” said Kelly Moore, military enrollment services coordinator with the University of North Carolina Wilmington. “They can expand on their military experience and become more competitive if they decide to earn a degree.”
The education fair helps service members on their path to success by helping them become more marketable in the civilian world.
“The fair provides insight into the benefits and opened my eyes to the changes in the civilian world,” said Sgt. Milford Anthony, light pack section head with Combat Logistics Regiment 2 and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, native. “It also empowers leaders to disperse information to their junior Marines.”
