CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - On a sunny, pre-Christmas Eve afternoon, several Boy Scouts and volunteers from the Lake Forest USMC Support Committee prepared bags full of hams, pies and other food items outside of the 1st Law Enforcement Battalion building. Forming a long line, approximately 50 Marines and their families waited in anticipation of the event.

Volunteers from Lake Forest, California, came together aboard Camp Pendleton, Dec. 23, 2014, to provide donated food to Marines from 1st LEB, I Marine Expeditionary Force, who cannot be with their extended families during the Christmas holiday.

The city of Lake Forest formally adopted 1st LEB in September 2013 and the non-profit support committee was established in February 2014. The committee’s mission is to enhance the lives of all the Marines in the unit and to tighten the relationship between the city and the unit.

According to Jim Rosenberg, president of Lake Forest USMC Support Committee, their organization has the intent of making a positive impact on the lives of the Marines from 1st LEB on a year-round basis.

“This is just a little way of giving back,” he said. “It’s our way of saying thank you for your service and for preserving the kind of life we have in this country. It’s a good cause and we want to do everything we can to promote it.”

Along with providing Christmas meals for the Marines, volunteers from Lake Forest also donated meals during Thanksgiving and helped sponsor 1st LEB’s Christmas party, donating eight truckloads of toys to the Marines’ children.

“It has been fantastic so far,” said Lt. Col. Daron Mizell, the commanding officer of 1st LEB. “You can tell that the volunteers put a lot of personal effort, thought, compassion and sincerity into the things that they do, and I think that resonates the most with our Marines.”

In order to further the relationship between 1st LEB and Lake Forest, the Committee plans to incorporate the community in open events that the unit hosts, said Rosenberg. Events may include open houses and tours of the Marines in action.

According to members of both the committee and the unit, the relationship between the two organizations is constantly evolving and both plan to continue to support each other in the future.
