YOKOSUKA, Japan – The guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell (DDG 85) received a new commanding officer during a change of command ceremony Dec. 19.
Cmdr. Edward D. Sundberg relieved Cmdr. Sharif H. Calfee after 18 months of service aboard McCampbell.
“The amount of accountability, responsibility, energy, and passion required to command at sea is unparalleled in any organization,” said Capt. Christopher J. Sweeney, deputy commodore of Destroyer Squadron 15. “Today, we reflect proudly on traditions carried on by Sharif, but also excited to look forward to what is in store under Ed’s command of McCampbell.”
Calfee, after receiving the Meritorious Service Medal presented by Sweeney, addressed the audience and his Sailors.
“For me, 18 months have raced by since I stood before you assuming command of McCampbell,” said Calfee.
Calfee served as the commanding officer of McCampbell since July 2013.
“To the mighty Hellcats, yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak at length with you,” said Calfee.” You are the finest crew I’ve ever served with and you have delivered a spectacular performance in every aspect.”
The Hellcat comes from the namesake of the McCampbell and is used to describe Sailors assigned to the ship.
Calfee’s next assignment will be at Commander, Naval Surface Forces U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Prior to assuming command, Sundberg served as McCampbell’s executive officer.
“To the McCambell team, you’re the best crew I’ve ever had the pleasure serving with,” said Sundberg. “I am truly humbled and honored to be allowed to serve with you again.”
McCampbell, assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15, is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
