A first responder with the Camp Lejeune Fire Department was recognized as the Emergency Medical Service Professional of the Year during the Onslow County Safety Awards Ceremony at Jacksonville’s Center for Public Safety in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Dec. 10.

The ceremony awarded first responders throughout the community for their acts of selflessness through a banquet and awards presentation while highlighting the partnership between Onslow County, the city of Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune.

Lejeune’s own firefighter and paramedic, William Camp, was honored for his outstanding performance and work. Camp
has served as a firefighter since 1998, and as a paramedic since 2005. “I’m honored to be nominated and accept
this award, but it’s never just one that has earned it. On behalf of my team, I graciously accept the award,” said Camp, a
    North Haven, Connecticut, native.

The public safety awards and banquet recognized those who serve the community both on and off base. They work together
to provide citizens a valuable service.

“The Jacksonville and Lejeune emergency services work together to create a safe community,” said Spencer Lee, deputy chief of Jacksonville Fire and Emergency Services. “They provide a great service to the community and need to know that they are doing a great job.”

In addition to Camp, Charles Wood, a traffic safety program manager, Alphaeus Moten, a police officer and David Hammel,
a NCIS military special agent were recognized for their services.

“If you’re going to serve the public, who better to serve than those who serve our country?” said Camp. “I get a kick out
of being able to say, ‘who do the Marines call when they need help? They call us.’”
