MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 is conducting construction work along with civilian contractors in order to complete two new hangars for Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2.

According to Sgt. Troy Blank, a heavy equipment operator with MWSS-271, the construction started in June by clearing out space across from VMU-2’s headquarters building to make room for the hangars.

The hangars will be used by VMU-2 to house its unmanned aerial vehicles, the RQ-7 B Shadow and the RQ-21 Blackjack.

The Marines with MWSS-271 were tasked with clearing out the piece of land and are currently in the process of laying down floor mats inside the new hangars.

“We are here to aid with the project and complete it as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Blank, a native of Booneville, Mississippi. “We are here to help our fellow Marines get their facility up and running so they can continue doing their jobs with a larger work space.”

The civilian contractors working with the squadron are completing the installation of the two new hangars. Additionally, they laid the concrete foundation and constructed water, sewer and electrical systems.

“The Marines were the ones who cleared the area for us.” said Bobby Walton, the superintendent quality control safety officer for the project. “The hangar is expected to be completed during the second week of December.”

According to Walton, the project was slated to begin in early June, but was postponed until later in July.

According to Capt. Juan Baldelomar, a logistics officer with VMU-2, the completion of the hangars will give VMU-2 a larger work space at a convenient location. The hangar will accommodate UAVs, aviation maintenance supplies, hazardous material and bathroom facilities.

“The convenient location of the hangar will make operations run smoother and decrease the amount of time it takes to prepare the aircraft for flight,” said Baldelomar. “The Marines had to walk a quarter-mile to the flight line with all their gear before the new hangar was built, but now they will just walk across the street.”
