KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - On an extremely sunny November day at Kandahar Airfield, the 59th Forward Engineer Support Team-Advance cased their colors in preparation for their re-deployment to the Tulsa District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On May 7, 2014, the 59th FEST-A deployed to Afghanistan for a nine-month tour in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 59th FEST-A was responsible for supporting three regional commands from the borders of Iran in the west to Pakistan in the east.

The detachment provided design and quality assurance support to Regional Command-South and the Regional Contracting Command in right-sizing Kandahar Airfield, replacing spot generation with prime power and repurposing compounds in order to support the theater retrograde plan.

The 59th developed an infrastructure continuity book for Shindand Airbase in RC-West in order to support the transfer of the base to the Afghan National Security Forces, designed force protection improvements for Camp Dwyer in RC-Southwest, and supported U.S. Central Command and the Department of State by packaging and shipping an excess wastewater treatment plant to support a refugee camp in the Kingdom of Jordan.

They also executed missions for USACE in support of the construction mission for the ANSF and supported several projects in RC-East due to the unique talents possessed by the unit members.

“The team completed over 70 design and construction projects totaling over $15 million and never turned down a project,” Maj. Christopher Jones, the FEST-A commander said.

The team members for this deployment of the 59th FEST-A included: Dale Davidson, Steve Issacs, and Chuck Miles from the Tulsa District. Abram Pinion from the Fort Worth District, Cleleste Banks from the Mobile District, and Tyson Yager from the Buffalo District. Sgt. 1st Class Frederick Bompuku served as the FEST-A Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge.

The 59th FEST-A will re-deploy to the U.S. in December after performing magnificently during their deployment.
