BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Capt. Christopher Misner, commanding officer of Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, readily accepted the invitation to speak about veterans contributions to the nation during Congressman Filemon Vela’s 2nd Annual Congressional Veterans Summit at the International Technology Education and Commerce Center in Brownsville, Texas.

“Our veterans are the ones who are used to serving others, so it’s nice to be able to show them that they have support at a local level,” said Misner. “This summit highlighted the network of community support that is available to our service members in a setting that was easily accessible and offered a variety of resources.”

Congressman Filemon Vela’s office announced the free event for all South Texas veterans and their families and emphasized that community partners are working together to provide South Texas veterans with a one-stop shop to visit with veteran friendly employers and organizations.

“There are so many different organizations out there helping vets, and every once in a while we bring them together to provide information to the vets to realize how many organizations there are and it gives them the opportunity to figure out which one of these organizations can really help them,” said Vela.

Approximately 90 vendors were on hand to offer assistance and show their appreciation to the veteran community.

“This avenue provided veterans with services ranging from free health screenings to vocational rehabilitation and peer support,” said Misner. “While service members may be aware of the benefits available to them, they may not know the extent of existing services that are offered locally and this summit provided a conduit to facilitate that void.”

According to Misner, Texas has a long history in supporting our nation’s veterans and this summit was a tangible way of saying thank you to those who served.

“Congressman Vela and the participating organizations should be commended for their commitment to our veterans and for making this day a success,” said Misner.
