MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FUTENMA, OKINAWA, Japan – The Single Marine Program held the third annual haunted house Oct. 24- 26 on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
After spending the previous month transforming the MCAS Futenma chow hall into a haunted house, volunteers operated the family-fun attraction open from sunset until midnight.
“It’s kid friendly at the beginning,” said Cpl. Larry W. Danley, from The Woodlands, Texas, and the haunted house coordinator. “But when the sun goes down, there’s no holding back”.
The haunted house was a great experience for the children living on Okinawa because it provides a Halloween experience like they would have in the United States, according to Tech Sgt. Mark Primus, from Port Charlotte, Florida, an electronic warfare craftsman with 82nd Reconnaissance Squadron, Air Combat Command, 12th Air Force, 55th Wing, 55th Operations Group.
The haunted house was an SMP event used to raise money for trips being planned by the group and to provide options to the service members not going home during the holidays.
“We do the haunted house to raise money for the SMP events, and to get sailors and Marines out of the barracks,” said Cpl. Yicinniya N. Williams, from New Bern, North Carolina, a volunteer at the haunted house.
The haunted house raised over $4,000 and had over 900 customers, according to Pfc. Hannah L. Ferraris, a refrigeration and air conditioning technician with Marine Air Support Squadron 2, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
The haunted house brings in more volunteers and more people each year that it is held, according to Danley.
“The haunted house is better than it was last year,” said Williams, an administrative clerk with Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III MEF. “We plan on making it better every year.”
