    91st Training Division (Operations)

SAN FRANCISCO - An air of electricity permeated the San Francisco waterfront's AT&T Park, with of the fans in the stadium hanging on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the first pitch of the baseball game between the hometown Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. The outcome of this game decided if the Giants would be moving on to the World Series; Major League Baseball's most desired series. Before the teams took the field, though, opening ceremonies would kick off the evening's events.

The 91st Training Division color guard was given the opportunity, Oct. 16, not only to represent their division, but the entire Army on the international stage of the National League Championship Series' deciding game. With very short notice, Master Sgt. Joseph Manibusan and his team of Army reservists were chosen to perform this time-honored tradition, and gelled quickly to showcase the 91st TD's and the Army's professionalism and precision.

The four Soldiers of the color guard stood in a tunnel below the stands, ready to bring out the national and Army flags. After only a few days of rehearsal, they were calm and focused as they were called to march onto the field and present the colors for the national anthem. A sea of orange and black, the Giants' team colors, welcomed the Soldiers as they strode in to the center of the infield. There were more than 43,000 fans, mostly for San Francisco, ranting and cheering in support of an American standard. Silence struck the stands, though, as The Star Spangled Banner rang in over the loudspeakers, while Manibusan, the senior non-commissioned officer of the 91st TD color guard, gave the order, "present arms!" With hats and hands over their hearts, players and fans stood proud in homage to the Red, White, and Blue.

Though they had minimal time training together and were performing in front of a sold-out crowd, the Soldiers rose to the challenge.

"All of us had a little bit of experience," said team member, Sgt. 1st Class John Fernandez. "Once we got together as a group, we were able to rehearse and run through it [with] repetition to get everyone in sync."

The team was honored to be called on to display the traditions of the Army, from flying flag to crisp dress blues, and remind the American people of the steadfast presence of the Army.

"To let the public know we are part of the community," color-guard member, Staff Sgt. Vernon Tang, stated in regards to his purpose in performing.
