    3rd Combat Aviation Brigade

HINESVILLE, Ga. – The Hinesville Rotary Club honored a 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade Soldier, Spc. Daniel Hicks, Company E, 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, at a meeting held in Hinesville Oct. 14. Hicks was honored for his accomplishments as a Soldier, and winning 3rd CAB Soldier of the Year.

Hinesville Rotary Club President, Brigitte Cabeza-Shanken said “service above self” is the motto of the Rotary Club, much like the Army Core Value of Selfless Service. She said it is a privilege to honor a Soldier who embodies this shared value.

“It’s a great honor just to let the Soldiers know that the entire community is thankful for their service,” said Cabeza-Shanken. “Selfless service is important. If we can share our blessings with just one person who needs it, we can make a difference.”

Accompanying Hicks was 1st Sgt. Robert Herfel, Company E, 1st Bn., 3rd Aviation Reg. Herfel said it’s important to be a partner of the local community.

“It’s important to recognize our Soldiers for the hard work they put into studying, preparing, and trying to become leaders,” said Herfel. “It’s definitely an honor for him and his Family as well.”
A native of Hampton, Tennessee. Hicks is a little surprised by all the attention. He’s happy all of his hard work preparing for, and attending three grueling boards paid off.

“It’s amazing. I never thought I would wind up winning Soldier of the Year,” Hicks said.

Hicks said he was grateful to his first sergeant for challenging him to excel, and set him up successfully to be a noncommissioned officer.

“It was a phenomenal experience. Each board I went to I got more and more experience that I can now use to set others up for success,” Hicks said.
