MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - With the stage lights dimmed and the crowd ready, master magician Carl Michael invited the audience into a world of magic at Twin Rivers Theater aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 29.

Through the coordination of members of Marine Corps Communities Services, Cherry Point service members received a spectacular show keeping with MCCS’s policy to stay committed to those who serve.

“I love magic because it gives the audience a sense of escape from their daily lives,” said Michael. “People could be going through some tough times, or just having a bad day, but when they’re watching magic, all that seems to fade away for a moment.”

Magic has been a life-long passion for Michael, who began practicing magic at the age of five after his grandfather showed him his first trick.

“I perform my grandfather’s tricks in my show, with a bit of a twist,” said the southeast Ohio native.

Michael is one of the few illusionists today who never had a mentor or trained under the guidance of another magician.

“I am completely self-taught,” said Michael. “I’ve done all my research and have tried to blend a combination of all the great magicians’ tricks and techniques into my act.”

The show was a great event to bring the entire family too, according to Jose Guevara, father of three and logistics officer with Marine Air Control Squadron 2. The show had something everyone in the family could enjoy, according to Guevara.

“It was awesome,” said Guevara, a native of Victoria, Texas.

“My favorite trick was the Sands of Persia,” said Guevara. “I was impressed when he mixed all the different colors of sand into the bowl then pulled dry sand from the water making it clear again.”

The entire crowd was involved with the act as Michael invited members of the crowd to stand or come on stage and assist him during the performance.

“It was an outstanding show,” said Guevara. “I hope we can see shows like this in the future.”
