WAILUA, Hawaii – Soldiers assigned to 3rd Regiment, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division conducted a full day of team building events at Bellows Air Force Station Beach Sept. 26 during the 3-7 FA Annual Never Broken Legacy Challenge.

The first challenge was held in July 2013 at Dillingham Airfield.

The purpose of the event was to enhance the Soldiers’ physical and mental resiliency while building cohesion amongst battery leadership and esprit de corps within the battalion.

“After multiple Legacy Challenges have been executed by 3-7 FA, Soldiers have come to realize that participating in a Legacy Challenge will be physically challenging, and that they will have to rely on all of their team members to successfully complete it,” 1st Lt. Kyle Kunz, officer in charge, 3-7 FA, a native of Mapleton, Utah, said.

“It allows the team members to work together to achieve a common goal, even when the task may seem overwhelming,” he also stated.

There were 18 teams that competed in the Never Broken Legacy Challenge. Each team consisted of one officer, one senior NCO, one junior NCO and two junior enlisted Soldiers, including cadets from the University of Hawaii Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program.

Spc. Izak Gray, Alpha Battery 3-7 FA, assistance gunner, hometown of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, said, “The significance of this challenge was to build unit cohesion, to see how far or hard Soldiers and teams are willing to push themselves for unit pride."

The events included: Tug-of-war, 100 burpees, a 7-mile run, a litter carry run, a sand bag carry through the ocean and a 300 meter swim. Throughout the whole competition the participants had to carry a coconut with them.

“Friendly competition, helped push not just yourself, but also your team members to their limit. It forces everyone to work as a team and help each other succeed as a team and not as individuals,” said Staff Sgt. Tarweh Witherspoon, a Section Chief with, A BTRY 3-7 FA, a native of Hamilton, New Jersey.

All teams that completed the events were awarded first, second and third place and bragging rights.

A Battery “War Dogs” “No Slack” took home first and second place in the Never Broken Legacy Challenge.

“Winning first place felt great, majority of our team was from my section. Our goal was to win every event, or be on top for every task assign to us,” said Witherspoon.

“These are the kind of events that units across Schofield need to do. It takes our mind of the normal daily work duties and pushes us to do more than we are used to doing,” said Gray.

Witherspoon said he encourages everyone who has not been a part of this type of challenge to take the time to participate; it will push you to perform at a level you would not imagine.
