MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - More than 60 competitors lined-up along Roosevelt Boulevard before the start of Marine Corps Community Services’ Sprint Duathlon/Relay at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 27.

Athletes from near and far gathered to test their endurance and competitive spirit as part of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune’s 2014 Semper Fit Grand Prix series. Participants completed two three-mile runs with a 10-mile bike ride between, a test of physical stamina with pride as the only prize.

The male first place finisher was Andrew Dominguez, who finished with a time of one hour and eight minutes. This was Dominguez’s second first-place feat at Cherry Point this summer. He also finished first in MCCS’s Sprint Triathlon/Relay in August.

“I’m not a very fast runner, I just have endurance,” said Dominguez, a native of San Antonio. “If you ask me to sprint 100 meters you would leave me in the dust. Luckily for me, I gained a lot of my ground in the bike portion of the race.”

According to Dominguez, he was obligated to finish at the top for his patients.

“Now all my patients know I’m not just making things up when we go through our session,” he joked.

The first-place female competitor, Sarah K. Horn, finished shortly after Dominguez with a time of 1:16:00.

“It was a beautiful day for a race,” said Horn, a native of Milwaukee. “There was a pretty good headwind coming back on both the bike and to the finish, but you just had to push through and get it done.”

Horn returned to the race for the second consecutive year with hopes of crossing the finish line first.

“I love coming out to the race,” said Horn. “Each year it is filled with great people.”
