    II Marine Expeditionary Force

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The Marines and sailors of Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group came together for a friendly day of competition and camaraderie during the regiment’s field meet at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 18, 2014.

The service members gathered outside the CLR-2 Headquarters Building, where numerous event stations ranging from football and softball to a truck-pull competition waited.

“[The Marines] spend every day at the shop doing their job,” said Sgt.Maj. Marion Hammerschmidt, the sergeant major of CLR-2. “Here they get a chance to blow off a little bit of steam and build camaraderie with other Marines, even if they are from another company or battalion.”

The unit even added individual competitions, such as pugil sticks and a bean bag toss, to engage service members who didn’t participate in the main events.

Throughout the day, Marines and sailors vied with each other as they rotated through the events and on toward the grand prize: a day off.

Halfway through the field meet, the unit took a short break for food and rest as points were added up and preparations for the team relay race were set in place. The race itself was designed to incorporate maximum teamwork in order to accomplish a variety of obstacles and reach the finish. The challenges included a team truck-pull and tire-flip competition as well as a comical tricycle race, which had the Marines and sailors struggling to control their undersized bikes.

Each team member needed to complete their obstacle before moving on to the next one.

“We worked as a team, and we got to know each other better,” said Cpl. Ruben Otero, a supply administration specialist with Combat Logistics Battalion 6, CLR-2. “It would be great to have more events like this, knowing it reinforces positive behavior and builds up camaraderie.”

For the final event, Marines partook in a tug-of-war match to determine the overall victor. In the end, Otero and his team from CLB-6 claimed the final prize, earning their day off.

“The Marines had a good time, smiles across the board,” said Hammerschmidt. “I even had some Marines come up to me and ask, ‘When are we doing this again?’ There are still Marines out here having a good time, still throwing Frisbees and kicking soccer balls.”
