MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - With popcorn, hot dogs and beverages in hand, Marine Corps Base Hawaii personnel and families laughed and cheered during performances by local acts at the base theater Aug. 28, 2014.

The base community was invited to the free Comedy for the Troops event, coordinated by local comedians Jose Dynamite and Patrick Tyrrell, and featuring local comedian Chad Wago as the master of ceremonies, local musical duo Sweet Corn and Peanut, as well as local comedians Klinton Imai and James Mane.

While Sweet Corn and Peanut brought different genres of music to the table with simple vocals and guitar, the comedians tore apart subjects ranging from dating sites to weight to parenthood and the Marine Corps.

“It’s a relief from the stress of life,” said Tyrrell of stand-up comedy. “It’s just a different way of looking at everything. There’s comedy in everything. You just have to see it.”

Tyrrell, who recently retired from the Marine Corps in July, was last attached to Wounded Warrior Battalion West-Detachment Hawaii aboard MCB Hawaii. Currently living in Honolulu, Tyrrell was inspired to become a comedian after attending a comedy show, and has been performing for three years.

Tyrrell said he hopes the show returns to the base in the future.

“There was a great crowd that was ready to laugh,” Dynamite said. “After talking to (the audience) after the show, they were happy that we came and performed for them. We hope the word spreads and we can bring laughter to more of the troops.”

Originally from St. Louis, Dynamite attended Chaminade University and has been in Hawaii for 18 years, and currently resides in Halawa, Hawaii. The comedian has performed for at least 10 years statewide. He first started performing comedy for a talent show at Chaminade.

Eventually, he worked with local comedian Augie T. as an opening act for nine years. He currently performs two shows a week.

Dynamite said Tyrrell had wanted to perform for the base for some time, and said the base supported the effort.

“We want to make it bigger next time,” Dynamite said.

Comedian James Mane has been performing comedy for five years. The Aiea, Hawaii, resident said he has enjoyed watching stand-up comedy since he was about 4 years old, and decided to give comedy a try, taking stand-up workshops. He performed for the first time May 1, 2009, for a class.

Mane said he enjoyed the base theater as a venue and would definitely return for another show if asked.

“One of my dreams would be to perform for the troops overseas,” Mane said. “I’m enjoying my freedom. I don’t have much talent, but I can act the fool and make people giggle. I would love to do more for the troops.”

He also hopes people will not only come out to support local comedians at shows, but to consider trying stand-up comedy themselves.

“It’s very therapeutic,” Mane said. “You get up there and unleash your emotions … you get (an) adrenaline rush.”
