FORT MCCOY, Wis. - Senior leaders with the 335th Signal Command (Theater) participated this week in learning the latest techniques for field command and control as part of Red Dragon exercises on Fort McCoy, Wis.

This executive level support system called the Command Post of the Future or CPOF provides staff leaders instant situational awareness and collaborative tools for a unified picture of the operational environment.

“This system is designed to gather critical information from across the battlefield to ensure commanders can better visualize it, so they can make the most informed decision possible,” said Patrick Swigert, an instructor of CPOF from Tactical Mission Command, Region East.

The software allows Battle Captains and Soldiers to not only input important information occurring in their own areas of responsibility, but it also allows them to learn how their section may integrate, impacts fellow sections in their own unit and other commands in a specific area of operation.

Pfc. Catlin Bixler is a first time user of the CPOF system assigned to the 335th Signal Command’s G2 or Intelligence section.

She said the opportunity to use CPOF during Red Dragon not only allows her to become more efficient in doing her job; it also helps her to keep her customers better aware.

“When it comes to Intel, a much more informed commander helps make my boss happy,” said Bixler.

Bixler’s battle buddy for the training event, Sgt. Christopher O’Neal, said he used CPOF before back in 2009.

He said he leaped at the chance to re-familiarize himself with how to use the software and some of the updates that have come along since he last used the system.

“It helps to better know the steps needed to properly update a product while also making sure it is right,” said O’Neal.

Ultimately, the information provided by Soldiers like Bixler and O’Neal allow section chiefs to create products which will allow them to better inform their boss of what may be of significance in the operational environment.

“Being in the US Army Reserve does mean unique challenges for our Soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Mel Zimmer, chief of plans and operations. “So it becomes even more critical for us to take advantage of these types of training opportunities, so our Soldiers can excel.”

The US Army has used the Command Post of the Future software since 2008 to include operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
