ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Many would wonder, “What is going on in Arlington Heights?” when in the same night all three of Arlington Heights’ K-9s attack, the village’s firefighters cut the doors and top off of a car, and the 85th Support Command rolls into the downtown area in a Humvee.

The answer is Arlington Heights’ National Night Out. National Night Out is a time for the public to come out into a fun environment while being informed in what it is that these different civil servants do for the community. Some of the informative displays included how K-9 dogs do their job in sniffing out narcotics as well as various apprehension styles of suspects.

The Arlington Heights firefighters came out and showed how they could cut a part a car to get full access to care for and extract a patient. While the 85th Support Command brought out a Humvee and interacted with families and children, allowing them the opportunity to climb inside their vehicle, and providing examples and stories of what the truck would be used for.

A few other services in attendance included the Cook County sheriff’s bomb squad, and the U.S. Secret Service forensic team.

Sgt. 1st Class William Keys, 85th Support Command, was one of a few soldiers that participated in this year’s event.

“It brings a lot of awareness,” said Keys. “Many people didn’t know we had a Reserve station here. Some could relate because they were in the military or from a military family.”

Sgt. 1st Class Deborah Plowden, also from the 85th Support Command, stated that this was the first time participating in this local event.

“It was a positive experience for me,” Plowden said. “I enjoyed interacting with the police officers and citizens in the Arlington Heights community. This is a great thing that the Arlington Heights Police Department does. They are visible, showing that they care. Although we (soldiers) received many ‘Thank you for your service,’ I extended that same appreciation to the Arlington Heights Police Department, because we both serve our country in one fashion or another.”

When asked if she would participate in the event again, her reply was, “Absolutely.”
