GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – Mentally tough, physically fit, warrior tasks proficient as well as the ability to quickly problem solve are just some of the characteristics required to be the 2014 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command Officer, Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year by earning tops spots in the three-day Best Warrior Competition at Grafenwoehr Training Area Aug. 12 through 14.
The events, held Army-wide, are meant to build esprit de corps and morale as well as encourage competition, said Sgt. Maj. Tony Tuck, G-3 operations senior NCO with the 7th Army JMTC. Competitors will be graded on their ability to perform the Army Physical Fitness Test, land navigation, weapons qualification, warrior tasks and battle drills as well as complete a written exam and essay. The most difficult portion for most Soldiers is the appearance board where Soldiers stand before a panel of command sergeants major and demonstrate knowledge of Army policies and regulations while also being assessed on their appearance in the Army Service Uniform.
The competitors are:
Ocala, Florida native Pvt. Benjamin Ranew, an infantryman assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment; Spc. Jacob Baker, a Greenville, South Carolina, native and medic assigned to the 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy; Sgt. Timothy Jenkins, an infantryman with Company A, 1st Bn. 4th Inf. Regt., a Kearny, Arizona, native; 7th Army NCO Academy Senior Small Group Leader, Staff Sgt. William Chavis, a McColl, South Carolina native; Sgt. 1st Class Levine DelPrado II, a Fairborn, Ohio, native, and a mortar observer coach trainer with the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany; and 1st Lt. Mitchell Messick, also with Co. A, 1st Bn., 4th Inf. Regt., a Fredericksburg, Virginia, native.
These six Soldiers are vying for top positions to move forward to the 2014 U.S. Army European Best Warrior Competition planned for September which will also take place at Grafenwoehr Training Area.
