MUSCATATUCK URBAN TRAINING CENTER, Ind.— Soldiers from the 92nd Chemical Company conducted a casualty extraction mission at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, July 25.

The training mission, held for Vibrant Response ’14, tested the Soldier’s ability to recover a casualty from a subway train under hazardous conditions.

“They preformed fairly well,” said Robert Fruggiero, senior decontamination analyst for ARNORTH and Observer Controller/ Trainer for VR ’14. “The completed the mission and did it safely.”

The team first preformed reconnaissance in the subway and due to the hazardous conditions the team found it safest to continue with their level A HAZMAT suits, which is comprised of a self-contained breathing apparatus and a vapor-proof suit.

“My team went in to the subway and found the deceased [mannequin], and loaded [it] onto a skit, which we used to carry casualties,” said Sgt. Gretchen Martinez, team leader and a Ponce, Puerto Rico native.

Martinez also spoke very highly of her two new team members Pvt. Joshua Spearman and Pfc. Philip Tuck, both Tampa, Florida natives and new to the unit in the past six months.

Once the mission was complete Martinez and her team where required to go though a decontamination station before removing their suits. The suits were washed with soap and water to make sure they won’t contaminate anything else.

“We feel that this type of training is vital to the success of VR ’14,” said Martinez. “I can really see an improvement from last year and am really excited to be here.”

VR ‘14 is a major field training exercise conducted by U.S. Northern Command and led by U.S. Army North. Approximately 5,500 service members and civilians from the military and other federal and state agencies throughout the country are training to respond to a catastrophic domestic incident.

As a component of U.S. Northern Command, Army North coordinates timely federal military response to disasters in the homeland to help the American people in a time of need.
