MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 11 hosted a Jane Wayne Day for Marines, Sailors and their family members aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., July 19.
More than 100 family members participated in the event and experienced a day in their loved ones’ boots.
Participants started the day with experiencing the intensity of a drill instructor before receiving a brief from Col. Rick Uribe, MAG-11 commanding officer, on the duties and capabilities of the squadron. Family members then traveled to Carlos Hathcock Range aboard the air station, where they fired the M4 service rifle before taking a break for lunch.
“We want to give them a realistic perspective of [who] our MAG-11 Marines and Sailors are,” said Jessica deLinde, a family readiness officer with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314.
After lunch, the families spilt into groups and rotated between stations consisting of static displays of multiple aircraft, jet engine test-cell demonstrations, a chance to run the obstacle course and a combat fitness test. This event helps family members see what the Marine Corps has to offer.
“Experiencing what recruit training was like with the drill instructors was, by far, the best thing I experienced today,” said Judith Acosta, a MAG-11 spouse. “It made me appreciate what my husband has gone through. Experiencing today helped me get a good look at the Marine Corps.”
At the end of the event, service members and their families returned to MAG-11 Headquarters, where they were commended for participating in the day’s activities and presented participation prizes.
