CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – Sailors assigned to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti visited Caritas, a homeless children's shelter in Djibouti, July 17, 2014 as part of a community relations (COMREL) project.

Chief Religious Programs Specialist Kevin Rumsey, Legalman 1st Class Gorgonia Cueto, project leader, and Religious Programs Specialist 1st Class Laura Aranda, organized the donation delivery.

"I have been volunteering here for over a year and it is always heartwarming visiting this place and seeing the children’s faces light up with joy," said Cueto. "The supplies we deliver will assist with activities that Caritas needs to function properly."

Improving the living conditions for the children is essential for them to build confidence.

"It is truly generous that these Sailors organize the donation of supplies in order for us to help children who are in need," said Father Jean Bertin, Caritas director. “During the summer months when school is out, is when we are in most need of donations.”

"It is very humbling to see the enthusiasm from the kids," said Religious Programs Specialist 1st Class Laura Aranda. "I am eager to come back and do more in order to help Caritas with additional supplies that they need because it is important to help the youth."

Caritas was founded in 2003 is sponsored by the local Djibouti Catholic Church and provides meals, medical care, clean water, and education to refugee and homeless children of Djibouti. Caritas is one place local refugee children can find security, learn how to read, practice the development of every day fundamental life skills.

COMRELs are designed to unite, strengthen and build a positive partnership with the people of foreign countries visited by U.S. Navy personnel.

"It is the mission here to serve our host country and I am honored and proud that we are able to do so," said Chief Religious Programs Specialist Kevin Rumsey. "I think that is amazing that these Sailors put forth their effort and teamwork to do something that will impact a child in such a monumental way."

Camp Lemonnier supports Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) and other tenant commands protecting United States interests in Africa and provides full spectrum individual support to personnel stationed on Camp Lemonnier. Camp Lemonnier partners with Djibouti to be a valued part of the community by fostering long term common interests.
