    SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – This week’s U.S. Army Central’s Soldier Spotlight is Master Sgt. Curtis Allen, a senior civil affairs noncommissioned officer. Allen, has a cumulative 30 years spent in the military, dividing his time in service between the National Guard and Army Reserve branches. Allen originally joined the Reserves in 1980 at age 17 before joining the active-duty component in 1998.

    The Torrington, Wyo., native joined USARCENT in January 2013 and is being recognized as USARCENT’s Soldier Spotlight for his initiative of starting the Team Shaw’s Combative Fitness facility, here, at Shaw Air Force Base, where Soldiers have their very own facility to train and prepare for the three upcoming tournaments their expected to compete in this year.

    As a senior noncommissioned officer, Allen always ensures to advise junior Soldiers by telling them, “Never lose heart doing good and when faced with a challenge, just continue to press on,” as he points out that junior Soldier are our nation’s next generation of senior leaders.

    Q. What are your hobbies?

    A. I like climbing, working out, bike riding, martial arts and gardening.

    Q. What do you enjoy doing most during your free time?

    A. I enjoy learning to fish and being with my family; going to church with them and continue my practice as a health coach.

    Q. What are your goals after retirement?

    A. Post-military, I would like to open my own fitness facility and help people with their physical therapy.

    Q. If you could take a vacation to a location of your choice, where would you go?

    A. I would go on an Alaskan cruise.

    Q. When did you make the decision to become a Soldier and why?

    A. I thought joining the military was just a natural progression of life, and I also lost a bet.

    Q. During the years of your career what do you enjoy most about being a Soldier?

    A. I really enjoy the camaraderie and the ability to shape our world environment; shape humanity.

    Q. If you could change one thing about the Army, what would you change and why?

    A. I would go way outside the box and want the creed of being a Soldier to be the constant reinforcement of military structure and separate it from politics.

    Q. If you could hold a different position in USARCENT for one day, what position would you choose?

    A. I would just be myself!
