POULSBO, Wash. – The city of Poulsbo, Wash., celebrated Independence Day with their annual July 3 Fireworks on the Fjord celebration.
The event included vendors selling food and beverages as well as memorabilia, paddle boat races, performances by local vocalists and the Navy Band Northwest group “Passage,” and a fireworks display over Liberty Bay.
“I come out every year to watch the show and listen to the music,“ said Navy Reservist Laure Mathis. “The Navy band is awesome, and every year the fireworks are better than the last.”
This festival marked its 25th year, but this year’s celebration almost didn’t happen.
“As of last weeks we didn’t have the funds to put this event on,” said Kathi Foresee, celebration committee member. “Multiple businesses in the community pulled together and thanks to their donations made this celebration possible.”
During the 1980s Naval Base Keyport hosted the fireworks display on July 3 so that its military members could spend the July 4 with their families. In 1989 a committee of volunteers from Poulsbo took over responsibilities for the event so military members could further enjoy this time of year.
“This event has always been put together by volunteers, either military or the local community,” said Becky Erickson, Poulsbo Mayor. “Its how we show our appreciation for what our forefathers did for all of us so long ago and our continued dedication to our military community members.”
