TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - A crowd of children and Combat Center followers of the Protestant faith conducted a parade throughout base housing areas in support of the upcoming Vacation Bible School for children, June 29, 2014.

The parade, led by a Combat Center Fire Department apparatus, began at Felix Field. Children hopped on bicycles and scooters or participated on foot, trailing the parade throughout the streets, while members of the church handed flyers to families interested in the program.

“We do [VBS] once a year for kids up to the sixth grade level,” said Jennifer Claypool, director, VBS. “It’s for children who have not yet been exposed to gospel or been in a church. It’s a way to reach out to kids.”

To highlight the event, Navy Capt. Steven Moses, Combat Center Chaplain, dressed as biblical figure Moses, while Warrant Officer Trevor Claypool, ground electronic warfare officer, Tactical Training Exercise Control Group, impersonated biblical figure Malachi.

While the group paraded through the neighborhoods, participants expressed the nature of the program, sparking the interest of families aboard the Combat Center.

“We're really excited to be able to get involved and reach out to the community for a great cause,” said Stacy Wilkins, spouse, whom participated in the parade with her two-year-old son, Carson. “[Getting] the kids involved will leave a great impact for them.”

The parade traveled through several streets, with children enthusiastically letting all know of their excitement for VBS.

“The message of this VBS is learning how to trust God even in hard times,” Claypool said. “[The] parade theme is Moses taking the 12 tribes of Israel throughout the wilderness.”

The VBS program is slated to begin July 14 through 18 at the Protestant Chapel in building 1541. On base service will be available. The program is open for children aged four to 12. To register, visit https://www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/hl/29palmsVBS.
