GLEN COVE, N.Y. - Being a high school athlete is more than just putting points up on a scoreboard. It's about actions both on and off the field. It's about quality of character, scholastic excellence, camaraderie, proven physical fitness and, most importantly, leadership. These are the traits considered when selecting this year's players for the inaugural Dan Daly Cup all-star lacrosse game to be held at Glen Cove High School on June 21 at noon.

The Dan Daly Cup will recognize Long Island's most elite high school junior lacrosse players. It is an opportunity to establish a strong connection with America's youth and make a positive impact on our local schools and communities. On the first day of training camp, June 16, the players were presented their jerseys in front of their friends and family. They then conducted community service by cleaning up brush and debris from Big Ralph Park in Glen Cove, N.Y., which had been neglected for a long period of time. The intent of the community service project was to promote personal growth, encourage civic responsibility and strengthen the local communities.

“I feel like the community comes and supports me so much in lacrosse that community service is a good opportunity for me to give a little back,” said Philip Grella, goalie for Glen Cove High School and team Virtue player.

The remaining of the training camp will consist of team practices led by the team coaches with assistance from some of the New York Lizards’ star players. Local Marines will also lead intense, military-style physical fitness warm-up drills and will finish practice with seminars that instill pride, emphasize teamwork, and discuss community responsibility.

“The leadership we're instilling in these athletes through the Dan Daly Cup demonstrates the value of ethics and the idea of selflessness through the Marine Corps leadership traits and principles. We are teaching these young men that there is more to the game than their personal statistics and individual achievements,” Maj. Robert M. Jones, commanding officer of Marine Corps Recruiting Station New York.

Dan Daly Week will continue to June 21 with a rededication ceremony for the Dan Daly memorial at Memorial Square in Glen Cove, N.Y., and parade led by the Marine Corps Base Quantico Band from the memorial to Glen Cove High School. Dan Daly is a two-time Medal of Honor recipient who was born in Glen Cove and is one of the Marine Corps’ most admired heroes. His legend and fighting spirit is respected to this day by all Marines.

Immediately following the rededication ceremony will be the culminating event when the all-star athletes take the field at noon to see who has what it takes to win the inaugural Dan Daly Cup.

“Through Dan Daly’s legacy, we're helping student athletes build lifelong leadership skills they can take back into their high schools and local communities. We hope this becomes a significant community event that will continue for years to come,” said Jones.
