FORT BRAGG, N.C. – When Marines become bulk fuel specialists, they learn their new jobs alongside Army Soldiers, and when they go down range, it is no different.
The 2014 Quartermaster Liquid Logistics Exercise (QLLEX), operationally controlled by the 633rd Quartermaster Battalion here, allows Marines from Bulk Fuel B Company, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group from Wilmington, Delaware, the opportunity to train in support of the Army Reserve.
The Marines used bulldozers to create a tank farm that will house four 50,000-gallon bags, said Gunnery Sgt. Charles Cassel, a bulk fuel specialist with B Company, from Horsham, Pennsylvania.
They also cleared the land surrounding the tank farms to make it a clean, flat and safe work environment for Soldiers to move about while working with the hoses that are going in and out of the fuel farm.
“It is a great opportunity for us, but we also get to support the Soldiers with hauling any equipment around that the Army needs help moving,” said Marine Sgt. Jessie Sergent, an engineer and equipment operator for B Company.
Everything we do here is in preparation for deployment, said Sergent.
“This is a valuable exercise. It simulates what our atmosphere would be during deployment, because we get to use our equipment and also work along side Soldiers. Any opportunity to practice in a real-world scenario is very important,” said Sergent.
This year, the Marines of B Company will be able to practice their skills while supporting Army Reserve Soldiers during QLLEX.
Sergent said he believes being a part of QLLEX is crucial for the Marines to have a mission that helps them become familiar with their equipment. He said this training exercise resembles the tasks the Marines may have to complete if they are deployed.
“We have many younger Marines that really will benefit from the time spent working in the field on the bulldozers,” said Sergent.
He said training exercises like QLLEX give the Marines a way to improve, because as they advance in their careers, they will need to handle more complex projects.
“This is a very fun job, but it requires a lot of skill and time to learn the job,” said Sergeant.
