LOGISTICS SUPPORT AREA ANACONDA, Balad, Iraq -- Green Beans Coffee opened on the camp's west side Feb. 4 to bring a taste of home to troops and civilians stationed here.

"Our mission is to try and provide a little touch of home down here," said Leroy Elliot, Army and Air Force Exchange Services Chief of Food, Balad.

The trailer, near Dining Facility Four, offers several coffee and chai choices, which have resulted in huge customer response.

"We get about 750 customers a day," said Pitt Vogel, AAFES general manager.

The facility took more than a year of planning to design an atmosphere that would remind customers of a stateside coffee shop, Vogel said.

Future plans for the area include other concession areas to service the west side of post.

"Preparations are already being put in place for the future food concepts," Vogel said.
Services and restaurants offered on the west side of post will be similar to those on the east side.

"Green Beans is the first of three food concepts for the west side," Vogel said. "Next in line are Pizza Hut and Burger King."

The concrete foundation is already laid for a second 15,000 square foot PX and plans are in place to add more traditional services, including a barbershop, beauty salon and alteration shop.

"It will take approximately 275 people to staff the [west side] area," Vogel said. "That includes employees for the store, concessions and food activities."

Green Beans is open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

Editor's Note: Pfc. Trevino is a member of the 28th Public Affairs Detachment from Fort Lewis, Wash. and is deployed to Iraq in support of units at LSA Anaconda.
