LAJES FIELD, Portugal - Defense Logistics Agency officials, Portuguese Air Force and 65th Air Base Wing first responders contained a mock fuel spill during a fuel spill exercise here, April 10, 2014.

The exercise tested DLA and Lajes Field first responder
capabilities to contain a fuel spill at the base's fuel tank
    facility.

"I'm impressed by Lajes Field's ability to respond quickly and decisively to a fuel spill, should one ever happen here," said Col. Chris Bargery, 65th Air Base Wing commander. "We take our responsibility to help care for Terceira's natural environment very seriously. Lajes Airmen are lucky to call Terceira home and we intend to always be good stewards of the environment."

The exercise scenario included a vehicle accident which caused the mock spill of approximately 500 gallons of fuel. Water was used to simulate spilled fuel.

The 65th ABW and Portuguese Air Base Four units regularly conduct small, medium and large scale exercises. Natural disaster response or fuel spill exercises often include the Portuguese Navy and local civil defense authorities.

Bargery said close coordination between Portuguese and U.S. Air Force Airmen is essential to a successful exercise.

"Portuguese and American Airmen have a strong tradition of cooperation and teamwork in these exercises and in day-to-day operations," the wing commander said. "We plan and execute these exercise scenarios side-by-side to ensure we understand each other's capabilities and requirements."

Lajes Field, a strategically located base in the Atlantic Ocean, employs the Air Force's second largest fuel store.
